Fifth grade marks a turning point in math learning—students are not only sharpening their computation skills but also applying math to real-world questions and challenges. Wild Math Fifth Grade meets learners where they are, combining hands-on, outdoor experiences with more abstract, written practice to build both confidence and understanding.
Just like the earlier levels of Wild Math, you’ll find hands-on, nature-based activities designed to help students build a deep understanding of key concepts. But as the math becomes more complex, this level offers more explicit guidance and step-by-step explanations to help you teach new topics with confidence. You’ll find plenty of examples and a brand-new feature—Quick Practice Problems—short exercises that let learners solidify their skills before jumping into activities or projects. These can be completed using natural materials or in a notebook, depending on students’ needs and learning style.
Fifth grade includes a year-long planner! These plans provide 36 weeks of lesson/activity suggestions to keep you organized on your journey through Wild Math Fifth Grade!
You’ll also find:
Quick Practice Problems for easy skill checks before moving into full activities
Hands-on and computation-based methods for all four operations with decimals and fractions
Real-world math projects, such as:
Timing a 100-meter dash and calculating speed
Using the Pythagorean theorem on a baseball diamond
Scaling recipes up and down
Word problems that can be acted out or written in a notebook
Math Notes—little boxes that explain key math concepts you might’ve forgotten
Book and board game suggestions for every unit to extend learning
A year-long planner with 36 weeks of suggested pacing and a blank planning sheet
A list of general math games and resource recommendations
Ideas for using local natural materials like sticks, stones, and mud to teach core concepts (e.g., decimal place value, volume, and fraction operations)
Wild Math Fifth Grade includes the following units, each with hands-on lessons, projects, and written activities (see table of contents for full scope and sequence of skills):
