Wild Words Phonics Nature Journaling

Wild Words Phonics Nature Journaling connects phonics skills to the real world by combining nature observation and sketching with phonics skills practice! By bringing phonics practice outside, children can make meaningful connections between the phonics skills they are learning and the real world. At the same time, children build knowledge about the wonders of the natural world. Wild Words provides an exciting nature-based way to reinforce phonics skills that is active and fun! 

Each activity features a nature-inspired “Wild Word” that emphasizes a phonic skill. For instance, in the RIB activity, children closely examine and sketch the leaves’ mid-rib. Then, they mark up the word RIB to show its component parts (cheat sheet included), brainstorm more words with that pattern, and write a related sentence using the word.

Wild Words covers the following phonics skills: short vowel sounds, open syllables, digraphs, blends, the FLOSS rule, and plurals.

The educator’s guide contains complete directions for over 39 activities, nature, neighborhood, general world lists, and even picture book recommendations! The student worksheets can be printed as a nature journal or print sheets as needed, making it practical and flexible for home and school use!

The Wild Words Student Workbook contains a worksheet for each Wild Word with a brief description of the nature journaling activity and guided phonics and writing practice. Blank Wild Word sheets are also provided so you can choose a different word to focus on that makes sense for your location or add additional words to your outdoor learning. You can print the entire book and use it as a nature journal or print selected sheets as needed. 

Wild Words aligns with Wild Reading Level 1 and is a great way to add in additional practice and review skills. However, it can be used alone or alongside another curriculum.
