Wild Math® Second Grade brings math to life through active, hands-on learning in the great outdoors. Using nature as the classroom, students explore concepts in concrete, meaningful ways, such as bundling sticks to understand place value and practice multi-digit addition and subtraction strategies, making mud pies to explore fractions, and using leaves, flowers, and songs to practice skip counting. Learning outside engages multiple senses, strengthens focus, and makes abstract concepts easier to grasp.
The curriculum is organized into units covering the topics typically taught in second-grade math, with engaging, outdoor-based activity ideas for each skill. Each unit also includes a curated list of math-themed books and games that work well for both outdoor lessons and indoor learning during cold or rainy days.
A full year (38 weeks) of suggested lesson plans, a pacing guide, and a blank planning sheet are included to support a well-structured yet flexible learning experience. The activities and strategies help build fluency in foundational skills while preparing students for more advanced concepts.
